Classic massage - the foundation everything starts from

A massage therapist's hands giving a back massage

Classic massage is the base on which most modern techniques are built. It comes from the Swedish tradition and for over a hundred years has been the starting point for massage therapists and physiotherapists.

Techniques of classic massage

The massage consists of several movements performed in a set order:

  1. Stroking - eases you into the massage and prepares the body for further work.
  2. Rubbing - circling with the fingers into the tissues, working where you feel tension.
  3. Kneading - working on the muscles, similar to kneading dough.
  4. Tapping - rhythmic, light strikes with a stimulating character.
  5. Vibration - shaking movements passed on to the tissues.
  6. Closing strokes - calming down and finishing the massage.

What many people experience after a classic massage

  • a feeling of relaxed muscles and less stiffness
  • a pleasant feeling of warmth and better well-being
  • general relaxation and a sense of lightness

Sensations are individual and not everyone experiences them to the same degree.

Classic or relaxation massage?

Both use similar movements, but classic massage is usually more intense and task-oriented - the massage therapist looks for tension and works with it. Relaxation massage stands for flow and calming down. If you do not know what to choose, say before the massage what you need - a good massage therapist will combine the two.

Contraindications

Fever and infections, fresh injuries, inflammation, thrombosis, skin changes in the massaged area, uncontrolled high blood pressure. With chronic diseases and during pregnancy, talk to your doctor first.

Frequently asked questions

Can it hurt after a classic massage?

With greater tension, slight tenderness for a day or two is possible, similar to that after a workout. If the discomfort gets worse or does not go away, talk to your doctor.

Do I have to undress?

Usually down to underwear, or to the extent you feel comfortable. The body is covered with a towel and only the massaged part is uncovered.

How often should I have a classic massage?

It is individual. Many people who work sitting down choose a massage once every 2-4 weeks, but the frequency is worth adjusting to your own needs.
