Therapeutic massage - what it is and how it differs from relaxation massage

Therapeutic massage is a massage performed for health purposes. It is usually carried out by physiotherapists or medical massage therapists with the right qualifications, often after a consultation with a doctor. It differs from relaxation massage mainly in its goal and way of working.
In what situations people look for therapeutic massage
- tension and stiffness around the neck and shoulders after working at a computer
- a feeling of overload after training, moving house or a long drive
- limited freedom of movement after a period of immobilisation (after consulting a doctor)
If you have pain, the first step should be a consultation with a doctor or physiotherapist.
What a visit may look like
It usually starts with an interview: what complaints you have, since when, whether there were injuries and tests. The specialist chooses techniques to fit the situation - from classic ones to work on selected muscle areas. The pressure may be firmer than in relaxation massage, but it should not hurt beyond your comfort. You may also get general tips on movement and stretching.
How many visits?
This is very individual and depends on the situation and the recommendations of the specialist. It cannot be stated in general - the plan should be set by a doctor or physiotherapist.
When to see a doctor first
Massage does not replace a diagnosis or treatment. Talk to a doctor or physiotherapist before a massage if the pain radiates to your legs or arms, is accompanied by numbness, weakness or fever, if it appeared after a fall or accident, or if the complaints are new or getting worse.
Contraindications
Acute inflammation, fresh injuries and fractures, thrombosis, cancer without a doctor's consent, infections with fever, skin changes in the massaged area.
The information in this article is general and educational. It is not medical advice and does not replace a consultation with a doctor or physiotherapist.
Frequently asked questions
Does therapeutic massage hurt?
It may involve firmer pressure than relaxation massage, but it should not be unbearable. Always say what you feel so that the pressure can be adjusted.
Do I need a referral?
In a private studio usually not, but the rules depend on the place and the type of service. If in doubt, ask at the studio or your doctor.
Can I bring my test results?
Yes. Information about your health and tests helps to choose a safe scope of work.
