Deep tissue massage - slowly, deeply, to the source of tension

Some tension sits so deep that a gentle massage cannot reach it. Deep tissue massage reaches the deeper layers of muscles and the connective tissue around them, known as fascia.

How it differs from an ordinary massage

The key is not force but tempo. The massage therapist works very slowly, often with the forearm or elbow, gradually increasing the pressure. There are fewer movements over the whole body and more precise work in a few key places.

Who is it for?

  • people who feel persistent tension in the neck, shoulders, back and hips
  • people who want firmer pressure
  • people who do strength and endurance training
  • people who feel they get "too little" from an ordinary massage

Does deep tissue massage hurt?

It can be intense, but it should not be unbearable. Good work stays within the limit of "pleasant pain" - your breathing stays calm and your body does not resist. Tell the massage therapist what you feel as you go. For a day or two after the massage the massaged areas may be tender.

How to prepare

Do not eat a heavy meal right before the visit, drink plenty of water afterwards and plan a quiet evening. It is better to move an intense workout to the next day.

Contraindications

Thrombosis and varicose veins in the massaged area, osteoporosis, taking anticoagulant medication, fresh injuries, inflammation, pregnancy, fever. If in doubt, ask a doctor first.

Frequently asked questions

Can deep tissue be done on the whole body?

It can, but usually it focuses on 2-3 areas so as not to overload the body with too intense work.

How often?

It is individual. Many people choose a massage once every 2-4 weeks to give the tissues time to rest.

Is it the same as sports massage?

No, although sports massage often uses deep techniques.
